Tamarisk, Salt Cedar


Scientific Name: Tamarix chinensis Lour.
Synonym: Tamarix elegans, Tamarix juniperina
Family: Tamaricaceae Recommended Temperature Zone:

Sun Exposure: Full sun, resistant to reflected heat

Growth Habits: Evergreen tree, up to 40 feet tall (10 m)

Watering Needs: Little water

Propagation: Easy by cuttings kept in moist soil until they grow.

The salt cedar has invaded many areas in Arizona, along the rivers and other water rich areas. It is considered a major pest. It resistance to salt makes it a reasonable choice in some garden areas. Cultivated varieties offer superior flower colors and should be used rather than a transplanted naturalized plant.

Cultural Practices:
The root system is invasive and should be kept away from plumbing and other septic tanks, as well as walls and foundations.
